How the Fiber Construction Process Works
STEP 1
Determining Interest in Fiber Internet – Complete
The first step in our process is complete. We surveyed dozens of homeowners north of Pella to gauge interest in Sully Telephone Association extending our network to their area to deliver fast, fiber-powered Internet. The response was a resounding yes.
STEP 2
Board Approval – Complete
Sully Telephone Association’s leadership team presented the positive survey results to our Board of Directors during the August 2025 meeting. After reviewing the high level of interest in our fiber network, the board approved moving forward with the project.
STEP 3
Step 3: Site Surveys – Anticipated Spring 2026 (Weather Permitting
Our team will contact homeowners who expressed interest in service to conduct a site survey of their property. This survey helps us determine the best path for burying the fiber optic line. Site surveys typically take about 20 minutes and can be conducted in person or over the phone. For more information, please see the FAQ section below.
Haven’t expressed interest yet or unsure if you’ll subscribe?
No problem! You can still let us know you’re interested by completing the form below. Even if you’re unsure about subscribing, we can still connect your home to the fiber network at no cost. Connecting to a fiber network can increase your home’s value and offers other benefits. To learn more, download our Fiber Guide.
STEP 4
Equipment Installation & Service Activation – Anticipated Summer 2026
Our team will contact homeowners who confirmed their interest and had the fiber line buried on their property. We’ll install FTTH (Fiber to the Home) equipment inside and outside the home, connect it to the fiber optic line, and activate the internet service.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) is the next-generation broadband network that can deliver telephone, high-bandwidth Internet, and TV services at speeds faster than what is provided by conventional coaxial cable or phone lines (DSL).
Our fiber only network is capable of up to 10Gig of bandwidth at each home or business for future growth. We also have multiple internet providers feeding our network. Our internet service will switch to a different provider if there are any issues. It matters to us that you have the stable, reliable service that you deserve.
Faster Internet speeds with competitive prices
FTTH will give our company the ability to offer much faster Internet speeds than what are currently available. Our new Internet access will not only be faster, but it will also be competitively priced. The speeds available using FTTH will be perfect for playing online games, watching videos, or any activity requiring a great deal of bandwidth.
Low latency
Playing online games, making video calls, and working from home via VPN all work better with low latency. FTTH has the lowest latency of all methods for delivery of Internet service to your home.
Better video services
The video services we offer will also be improved on our FTTH network. This new technology will give us the ability to offer new services to our customers as they become available. Video services will also be available to more of our customers than the technology we currently use.
The same local service and support your deserve
The technology we use to deliver services will be different, but the friendly local service you’re used to receiving will remain the same.
An important tool for economic development
Many companies consider fiber networks a necessity when considering a move to a community. Our new FTTH network will help ensure our community is ready to take advantage of future economic development opportunities.
Each passing day reliable internet is becoming more of a necessity. We believe you should have the best quality service that technology has available at a fair price. All options come with unlimited data usage with no extra charges. Streaming on multiple devices, working from home, connecting to VPN’s, Microsoft teams, Zoom, in home classes work perfectly. Services such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, online gaming, home monitoring services, security video work flawlessly as well. Number of users doesn’t matter our service will work.
The first step before a fiber line can be buried to your home is a “site survey”. We will meet with you for around 20 minutes at a time that is convenient for you. We document any private utilities, such as drain tiles, private electric lines, dog fences, and decide where to bury the fiber to your home. We are currently scheduling site surveys for fiber drop installation to homes this spring, summer, and fall. This part of the process is very important to keep everything on schedule.
Mechanicsville Fiber owns, operates, and maintains the project.
Ongoing.
There are no fees to have the fiber buried to your home or business, no installation fees to connect to our service at time of installation, there are no contracts for our services.
Construction work will take place on weekdays anytime from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. No work will be scheduled on major holidays or weekends.
Much of the construction will take place in right of ways, but in some cases it will also involve work on your personal property. This may require trenching, plowing or boring of portions of lawn or landscape, irrigation system, sidewalks and driveway areas. Mechanicsville Fiber will fully restore the areas to their original condition within a determined period of time.
You may contact Mechanicsville Fiber at (563) 432-7221 during normal business hours to discuss any construction-related problems or concerns that may arise.
At each home the protectors (the gray box outside your home) will be replaced with a FTTH ONT (optical network terminal) that “Talks” to the fiber. Each ONT requires power and will be connected to your power provider. Adtran, the manufacturer of this product, has tested and measured power consumption for fiber ONTs mounted to homes and businesses for the purpose of terminating telecommunications service over the fiber networks. The power consumption for Adtran’s 324E ONT is a nominal 5.71 Watts.
